▌About Me

Hello!

I'm Chen-Wei Pan, a saxophonist and educator whose work is centered on jazz with pop as an extension. I excel at freely switching between melody and rhythm on the saxophone and have participated in various live performances and collaborations with different ensembles.
To me, the saxophone is not just about accumulating techniques and scales, but an instrument that can "speak." I love to explore how melodies breathe, how rhythms propel music forward, and I'm skilled at transforming seemingly complex jazz concepts into an understanding that students can immediately apply to their playing.

Whether you're picking up the saxophone for the first time or have been playing for a while and feel stuck, I hope to help you play with a steadier and more directed sound, gradually finding your own tone and voice.

▌Musical Background

Education

  • Master of Music, National Dong Hwa University - Jazz Program

Majored in saxophone, specializing in jazz and pop music performance. Graduated from the Jazz Program of the Department of Music at National Dong Hwa University, receiving comprehensive training in jazz vocabulary, improvisation, ensemble playing, and stage performance.
Throughout my studies, I continuously delved into tone control, rhythmic groove, and jazz harmony, emphasizing the connection between "auditory comprehension" and practical playing. My style is versatile, and my musical sense is distinct.

▌Performance and Teaching Experience (Selected)

  • Performed at Houli Musical Instrument Festival, winning "Best Jazz Award"
  • Participated in YouTuber Teacher Chiang's Baritone Sax recording project
  • Served as a wind instrument teacher in elementary school for three years

Numerous live jazz and pop music performances and cross-genre collaborations, performing at venues such as Taichung Jazz Festival, Kaohsiung Pop Music Center, Taipei National Theater and Concert Hall, etc.

▌Classroom Style

I will guide you to first establish correct vocalization and tone concepts, ensuring each note stands firm.
Then, starting from actual songs, I will break down melodies, harmonies, and rhythms into clear frameworks, allowing you to understand and play them.
During the learning process, I will guide you to understand music by ear, rather than just memorizing fingerings, gradually developing improvisation and responsiveness, so that the saxophone truly becomes a tool for expressing your ideas, not a burden of memorizing scores.
